+ POOL
UncategorizedA daring urban project proposed for New York City rivers. A self-filtering public pool designed to filter "the very river that it floats in." Pretty Neat.
+ POOL started with a simple goal: instead of trying to clean the entire river, what if you started by just cleaning a small piece of it? And what if you could change how New Yorkers see their rivers, just by giving them a chance to swim in it?
To learn more about the project, the amazing team behind it, or to help back the project, check out their Kickstarter page!

Mourning the death of an Era..
Architectural Design, UncategorizedWe morn the death of an Era as new Cooper Union President, Jamshed Bharucha, made a history-altering decision on April 23, 2013, to charge tuition to its students--abandoning Peter Cooper's 153-year old founding principal and belief that education should be as "free as the wind."
"[...Alexander Gorlin, Class of 1978, taught at Cooper and sat on the president's advisory council. "[This is] a sad day and especially ironic at a time when the gap between rich and poor has never been wider," wrote Gorlin in a statement to RECORD. "When the Mayor of New York is worth $17 billion and no one can figure out how to maintain Peter Cooper's 19th-century vision of education as 'free as the wind,' it appears that we are reverting in the 21st century to Thomas Hobbes' insight that the life of man is 'nasty, brutish and short.' As an alumnus of Cooper Union I am ashamed and embarrassed."]"
..We concur.

A Night of Speed-Mentoring with Tory Burch
Entrepreneurial, FashionAnother successful Mentoring Event hosted by the Tory Burch Foundation--a nonprofit organization launched in 2009 by Tory Burch to support the empowerment of women and families. TBF invests in the success and sustainability of women-owned businesses through grants and microfinance for women entrepreneurs. Attendees consisted of about 100 women from diverse professional backgrounds and cultures--all at various stages of successful business ownership.
In March, we had the exclusive opportunity to connect and share our personal stories - not only each other, but with an amazing group of successful CEOs and business owners, like Bill Ford (CEO of General Atlantic), Sarah Gallagher (President, Ralph Lauren North America E-Commerce), Jennifer Pate Gilbert (Founder and Chief Visionary Officer of Save the Date), Maneesh Goyal (CEO of MKG Events), Natalia Overti Noguera (Founder and CEO or Pipeline Fellowship), Kathleen Warner (COO of Startup America Partnership), amongst others. A portion of the evening was also dedicated to celebrating the Tory Burch Foundation's first graduating class, through partnership with Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses--a business and entrepreneurial education pilot program for 19 TBF entrepreneurs in New York.
Many thanks go out to the Tory Burch Foundation and AccionUSA--TBF's first partner--for their collective mission in supporting and celebrating women entrepreneurs.
Girl Talk: Naomi Campbell and Zaha Hadid Discuss Art, Fashion, And Flying First Class
Architectural Design, Cross-Overs, Fashion
An (un)likely pairing: two strong women who dominate(d) their professions join forces to design a new home for the former supermodel in Russia.
In Naomi's interview with Zaha, the defiant duo talk about everything from film to fashion; Zaha's interdisciplinary collaborations with fashion, shoes and jewelry; politics; architecture; ...the politics of architecture; and how being a foreigner, a woman, and an architect has compelled her to fight harder and push her work forward, despite the odds.
Hadid’s incredible rise to the top of the architecture world has been an uphill battle. Hadid said, “I used to disapprove being called a woman architect, because what is important is that I’m an architect, woman is background information.”

Hövding: The Invisible Bicycle Helmet - by Swedish Female Duo Anna Haupt and Terese Alpin
Cross-Overs, Design, FashionSwedish female duo, Anna Haupt and Terese Alpin, set out in 2005 to prove the male masses wrong with the 7-year long development of their Industrial Design Thesis project: The Invisible Bicycle Helmet. Drawing inspiration from an impending city-enforced law on bicycle helmets, and their creative self expression and sense of style, Anna and Terese were determined to counter this imposition by creating a helmet that put safety first, but that also kept the boundless beauty of the fashion-forward metropolitan woman in mind. Through passionate determination, and a unfaltering belief in their abilities, dreams, and their product--despite the countless number of people urging them otherwise--Anna and Terese have successfully surmounted disparate gender boundaries in technology and product development. Check out the article on this duo in Forbes (Forbes Woman) by Denise Restauri.
Their product is poetic, smart, graceful. It tells a poignant story of utter determination and self-belief in the face of doubt and resistance. Go ladies!
